Canada is the largest public financier of fossil fuels in the G20, funelling billions of dollars in support every year into an industry that must be wound down to avert severe climate breakdown.
In this submission to the House of Commons’ environment committee, we argue that the government must put an immediate end to all public financial support for fossil fuels, through legally binding and enforceable measures. These measures should
- apply to all Canadian public institutions that provide, or have the potential to provide, financial support for the fossil fuel sector;
- cover companies involved in all phases of fossil fuel development, from exploration and production to storage, transportation and distribution; and
- include no exemptions for companies or projects employing questionable emissions-reduction technologies.
