Canada has banned the importation of goods made by forced labour since July 2020. To date, a mere 50 shipments have been “intercepted and assessed” by customs authorities under suspicion that they were products of forced labour. Only one shipment was prohibited from entering Canada. The remaining shipments were released for entry.
In this submission to Global Affairs Canada’s ‘Public consultations on measures to strengthen Canada’s import ban on all goods mined, manufactured, or produced wholly or in part, by forced labour,’ we draw from our May 2024 report and propose recommendations for how the government could improve enforcement of the import ban.
