Several countries in Europe have adopted laws imposing human rights due diligence obligations on large corporations. The European Union recently passed similar legislation, and proposals have been tabled in Brazil, Japan and South Korea. In Canada, the government has committed to introducing legislation to eradicate forced labour from Canadian supply chains and to ensure businesses do not contribute to other human rights abuses.
This symposium will explore how Canada can build on the models pioneered by other states and strengthen global efforts to hold companies to account for human rights abuse in their operations and value chains. The event will foster discussion on international developments relevant to Canada, drawing on the expertise of global leaders. Participants will include representatives from government, academia, the legal profession, civil society and business.
The symposium is co-sponsored by Members of Parliament Sameer Zuberi (Liberal Party), Heather McPherson (New Democratic Party), Simon-Pierre Savard-Tremblay (Bloc Québecois) and Mike Morrice (Green Party), and by Senator Marilou McPhedran (Non-affiliated).
This is an in-person event. Simultaneous French/English interpretation will be available.
Coffee, lunch and refreshments will be provided.
Date and time: Tuesday, October 29, 9am-5pm EDT
